Name?

Phillip Hall

Where do you live?

Inner West Sydney

What do you do?

I’m the Youth Engagement Co-Ordinator for Animal Liberation NSW, and I also study Law and Sociology full-time at Macquarie University.

What does veganism mean to you?

Veganism means reducing our contribution to cruelty and exploitation of other living beings wherever possible, to the best of our abilities. It involves recognising that non-human animals have intrinsic value and have a right to live undisturbed, not just based around the instrumental values we place upon them.

What is your most memorable dining/eating experience?

In my early vegan days I was stopped over in Brisbane for just one day, and my friend took me to the Alibi Room where I got a vegan Mexican pizza, covered in soy cheese, corn chips, and jalapeños. Best.

If you could invite 3 people (historical or current) to dinner who would they be?

Nicky Wire, Abbie Hoffman, and Ellen Page.

What would you serve?

Vegan Mexican pizza.

Sweet or savoury?

I have way too much of a sweet tooth for my own good.

Where is your favourite food destination?

My mouth, en route to my stomach. Hilarious jokes aside, nothing is quite as gorgeous as getting out of the city to Leura for some Rubyfruit.

What’s your speciality dish?

Chilli sin carne! Extra spicy!

What food best describes your personality?

Vegan Mexican pizza.

What’s your favourite thing to eat on a hot summer’s day?

Mango

Cold winter’s night?

Chilli is a perennial favourite.

If you were a vegetable what would you be?

I yam what I yam.

Describe a normal day in the life of Phillip.

No two days are the same for me, but at any given point they could include: procrastinating, exercise, reading, doing uni work, listening to music, making music, organising animal rights events/rallies/protests, attending animal rights events/rallies/protests, going to various animal group meetings, riding my bike, eating burritos, watching movies, or seeing my friends. All pretty unremarkable stuff written down!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

No shame. To quote Chief Wiggum “I say if it feels good, do it”.

What did you have for breakfast?

I have the same thing every morning: oats, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, sultanas, nuts, banana, strawberries, and cinnamon, with rice milk.

You’re on death row and it’s your last meal. What do you eat?

A mint condition copy of Spider-Man #1

What are your plans for 2015?

Make the world a better place, go to Splendour In The Grass, eat more vegan Mexican pizza, relax.

Anything else you’d like to add?

You don’t need to be “switched on” constantly to fight for animal rights, or any social justice issue. Make sure you keep your social life, and your individual personality, still active outside of that. It helps you keep your mental and physical health in check so you don’t just get consumed by negativity and frustration. Food can be an awesome part of that, taking time out to treat yourself to some amazing vegan goodies with your friends!
