Where do you live?

What do you do?

For work I do part-time consulting as well as some creative freelance work (usually food photography and video production). For pleasure (and sometimes work), I love to blog, cook, and paint (I’ve started painting a few months ago and absolutely love it).

What did you have for breakfast?

Usually a cup of Ginger Latte in the morning followed by a glass of green smoothie or oat porridge.

When and why did you decide to go vegan?

26 September 2013! I was trying to eat better and came across veganism. I thought it was so extreme but after months of research I was compelled to give it a go for 8 weeks, and it felt so good that I kept going and here I am!

What does veganism mean to you?

Trying my best to be kind to animals, as much as practically possible.

What is something surprising/interesting you’ve discovered or realised since going vegan?

Going vegan is definitely not easy, but it’s not as hard as I thought it was going to be.

Have you ever been called a forkin’ vegan?

Not yet!

Describe a normal day in the life of Keren.

Everyday is a little different but I try to have a morning routine so I feel more in control with my day. I normally wake up around 6:30-7am, have glass of water (sometimes warm water with a squeeze of lemon juice), then write a to do list for the day. After that I would make myself a glass of Ginger Latte and then take my dog for a walk while sipping on that. Then I’d come back and work until the afternoon. Sometimes that means blogging, other times it means meeting with potential clients, or shooting a recipe, or editing a video, or a combination of the above depending on what has been scheduled. Once I finish work I would prepare dinner (unless it’s Wednesday or Friday) and then watch Netflix over dinner. After that I would do a bit of work before hitting the bed. I try to go to bed by 11pm but I can’t honestly say that it happens every night 😛

What food best describes your personality?

Vanilla Ice Cream. Simple, melts easily, a bit messy, but fun to be around 🙂

Sweet or savoury?

Both!

What is your most memorable eating/dining experience?

It’s gotta be Ain Soph in Japan. It was during my 3rd month of being vegan and I really didn’t think I’d be able to eat ‘normal’ again. But this little vegan restaurant in Ginza just blew my mind with delicious vegan risotto, pancakes, schnitzels and more. It was such an incredible experience and truly inspirational.

What is your favourite song/album to listen to in the kitchen while cooking?

I normally listen to Podcasts while cooking (I love Tim Ferris and Rich Roll) but when I do listen to songs – I’d normally listen to my current favourite on repeat (I currently like SIA).

What is your speciality dish?

Tempe Adobo

If you could invite 3 people (historical or current) to dinner who would they be?

Elisabeth Gilbert, Barrack Obama, and Salvador Dali.

What would you serve? 

My Tempeh Adobo of course! And probably some vegan pancakes for dessert.

Where is your favourite food destination?

Italy! I absolutely love pasta.

What is your favourite thing to eat on a hot summers day?

Acai Bowl with lots of fresh berries.

Describe your perfect day.

Wake up at 6:30am, meditate and journal for an hour, drink my green smoothie, have uninterrupted work time until 4:30pm (with a light lunch in between), exercise for half and hour, walk the dog, cook dinner and then enjoy dinner with my boyfriend hubby Nat while watching Netflix, work for another hour or so and then bedtime.

You’ve been asked to contribute a recipe for an upcoming cookbook. What is it?

Rosewater and Macadamia Shortbread. I made this for my wedding and everyone loved it!

If you were a vegetable what would you be?

A broccoli

What is your guilty pleasure?

Chips

You’re on death row and it’s your last meal. What do you eat?

If they let me cook, probably my home-made tofu fried rice.

How do you think we can each make the world a better place?

I believe that most humans would do the right thing given the choice, most just don’t know that there is a problem or they don’t think that they could make an impact. I think that if we can generate more awareness surrounding some of the problems in the world, more people would take action.

What’s the best thing about being you right now?

Healthy and surrounded by people who I love and who love me – my parents and my sister are currently here for my wedding last week so I’ve been enjoying spending time with them.

What are your plans for 2017?

2017 has been a big year for me. I quit my full time job, launched a food business, moved house, got engaged, and then just recently, got married.

With only 3 months to go until the end of 2017, my plan is to just stay on course and be as productive as I can, with work and everything in general. That means minimising time spent on social media and focusing on dealing with important things first.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Yes. I think going vegan has made me see the world differently and it has been the catalyst of so many other changes in my life. Once you’ve made a decision to align your actions with your values, something shifts. You’ll start doing the same thing with your work, relationship and more. I’ve never felt more authentic, and more ‘me’ than now.
